Statistically it appears that our children are having difficulty performing in the academic arena. I would beg to differ. Our children don't have problems learning, our children are not engaged in the learning process because the way that it is presented is not appealing to them.
What worked for us growing up does not work for them. They are not excited by the prospect of being rewarded with a piece of candy or the teacher's approval. Regarding the teacher's approval, why would a student today even be interested in it? They are not familiar with approval, or love for that matter, because it is lacking at home.
No, our children do not have problems understanding mathematical processes. WE have failed to connect with them on the most basic level. The level of relevancy. They do not understand why it is relevant to learn certain subject matters. Our children do not understand that history is THEIR history, math is THEIR math, language is THEIR language.
How can we make them understand that? They have to be part of the picture, part of the equation, then it becomes relevant to them and they will begin to care about what is being presented.
Our children have never had a problem with processing information. They do it everyday when they interact with adults that do not show them the respect that they deserve and adults that can not handle their own affairs, then turn around and offer them guidance.
There are many reasons why other children appear to be achieving academically. At the very least the child that is accomplishing goals academically has either a sense of self or is eager to please someone other than themselves. When it comes to children that are not self motivated, we have to be careful not to force our children into 'dog and pony' shows, where they are overly concerned about performing well for others.
This Mother's goal is to make GOD fearing, well-rounded, contributing human beings, FIRST. I say again, the challenge is not academic for our children. It is assuring that they have a true knowledge of self that will enable them to conquer the challenges inside AND outside of the classroom.
