Nurses in the Black Reality--It's Not Everybody's

Recently the Chicago Suntimes ran a cover page article talking about the difficulties that some new nurse grads are having in this new economy.

Contrary to media coverage that the health care industry has been insulated in this economy, the nurse in Elmhurst and Oak Park can't find a job.

Whenever I read an article like this one I always try to read the commentary by the public that follows.

One commentator said that they are talking about White people that are in Oak Park and Elmhurst that do not want to go to the south side of Chicago and other places where minorities live. It goes on by saying that if you want to find a job in places like Oak Park and Elmhurst you need to be able to speak Spanish. That seems more right.

I know of someone (I think he even lives out that way), he is White and he is taking a Spanish course simultaneously to his nursing courses. He understands that the needs and demographics of his community are changing. These commentators also pointed out that nurses are being replaced by specialty CNAs and LPNs to fatten the profits of these companies. Also true.
I appreciate the article, the dynamics are true for these particular demographics.

When it comes to us, the Black community needs nurses, they know that, everybody does not want to work in our communities. Sad but true. Our people need to have healthcare providers that care about them, and it seems that they won't be coming from Oak Park, IL or Elmhurst, IL.
